In 1894 Alonzo LaRue Ward Sr. built a red brick, three story, 100-room hotel called the Alonzo WardHotel. It was one of Aberdeen's most impressive buildings. In 1926, the WardHotel was completely destroyed by a fire. It took about one million gallons of water and firefighters from three towns to conquer the blaze. The fire caused $300,000 in damage. A.L. Ward rebuilt his hotel to be the most elegant upscale hotel in the booming Midwest. The new hotel is a six story, fireproof, 130-room hotel which opened on May 15, 1928.
Today the Alonzo Ward Hotel is owned by Blackstone Developers and proudly features the Ward Plaza Restaurant, Pub and Catering as well as the Artist's Showplace Gallery.
